While the surgery itself is performed at the LASIK MD Edmonton clinic, patients will return to The Eye Clinic for their postoperative care.
What is LASIK?
LASIK surgery is a vision correction procedure that is designed to correct a variety of vision issues including nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism, and reading vision (presbyopia).
Standard LASIK surgery involves creating a flap in the cornea with a microkeratome and using an advanced excimer laser to reshape the underlying cornea. The flap is replaced within minutes and within a few hours, the surface of the cornea begins to heal into place. After a few days, the flap is permanently sealed and vision is corrected.
This safe and pain-free procedure only takes around ten minutes in which the laser itself is only used for less than one minute per eye.

The Preoperative Consultation
Through our partnership with the LASIK MD Edmonton clinic, The Eye Clinic can conduct the necessary assessments and preoperative consultations before having your surgery.

The Day of Surgery
Before you undergo LASIK surgery, your prescription will be verified and you will meet with a clinical counselor to discuss the steps you are about to go through as well as the necessary postoperative instructions.
You can expect to be at the clinic for 3-4 hours.
On the day of your surgery, it’s important to arrange transportation to get you home following your procedure – you will not be able to drive.
It’s normal to feel nervous or anxious before your procedure so, to help you relax, you have the option of taking a mild sedative, such as Ativan, at the clinic.
Postoperative Care
After your LASIK procedure, you will have the opportunity to relax in the waiting area before leaving. During this time, the surgeon will verify that your eyes have started to heal.
You will be provided with special sunglasses to wear outside – regular sunglasses do not provide enough protection. You will also be given eye drops to use.
The LASIK MD doctors will ensure that you have received postoperative measures and instructions but it is still vital that you attend a postoperative examination to ensure that your eyes are properly healing.
Here at The Eye Clinic, our optometrist can perform postoperative examinations 24-hours after your surgery as well as provide follow-up care.
